Musculoskeletal and Plastic Surgery
We treat patients in orthopedics and traumatology, hand surgery, and plastic surgery.
The division of Musculoskeletal and Plastic Surgery has focused not only on the basic and special level of care of patients in the Helsinki metropolitan area, but also on the most demanding trauma surgery in the entire HUS. Special level referrals to our division also arrive from the Helsinki University Hospital cooperation area and from elsewhere in Finland. Certain national responsibilities have been centralized in our unit, such as the treatment of cleft lip and palate cases. We operate at Park Hospital, Jorvi Hospital, Peijas Hospital, and Herttoniemi Hospital.
Divisions
Musculoskeletal Surgery is one of the tree divisions in the HUS Musculoskeletal and Plastic Surgery department. The division provides specialist medical care services in the specialties of orthopedics, traumatology, and hand surgery. The Musculoskeletal Surgery division has activities in Töölö, Jorvi, Peijas, and Herttoniemi hospitals.
The division’s Joint Replacement Center in Peijas Hospital is one of the largest in the Nordic countries. The unit performs nearly 3,000 joint replacement surgeries each year, most of which are targeted at the treatment of primary osteoarthritis of the hip and knee.
Also the traumatological activities in the Musculoskeletal Surgery division, the majority of which are concentrated in the Töölö unit, is extensive and of high-quality by international level.
The majority of patients arrive for treatment in the Musculoskeletal Surgery division from the Helsinki University Hospital Area, but in the treatment of illnesses and injuries requiring special expertise, the division’s responsibility also covers the Uusimaa region and, to some extent, also the Helsinki University Hospital cooperation area (Kymenlaakso and South Karelia.)
Some patients in need of treatment also come from outside the area of responsibility, such as severe pelvic and hand injuries.
Plastic Surgery is one of three divisions of the Musculoskeletal and Plastic Surgery Department. The division is responsible for all plastic surgery procedures in the Helsinki University Hospital Area. The units included in the division in Töölö and Jorvi hospitals also treat demanding patients of special levels arriving from elsewhere in the Uusimaa region, the Helsinki University Hospital Specific Catchment Area (Kymenlaakso and South Karelia), and from elsewhere in Finland.
Nationally, the treatment of demanding burn injuries and transgender surgery has been centralized in the Plastic Surgery division. In the division’s Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Center HUSUKE, we treat cleft patients centrally from throughout Finland. Part of HUSUKE, the Craniofacial Center is an internationally recognized unit specialized in skull deformities.
The Plastic Surgery division line has also been distinguished in the corrective surgery of sarcomas, head and neck area tumors, and tissue deficiencies caused by trauma.
Teaching and Research is one of three divisions in the Department of Musculoskeletal and Plastic Surgery.
The main objective of the division is to promote high-quality teaching and research. The division supports the activities of the clinical specialties in the Musculoskeletal and Plastic Surgery by
- Developing teaching, training, and research in the field
- Teaching and training specialists, specializing physicians, medical students, and representatives in health sciences
- Collaborating with primary health care.
High-quality research is used to develop treatment methods and improve the quality of patient care, and to train top-notch professionals and experts in the field.
