Specialized medical care solutions for treatment of obesity
Keywords:Obesity is a major public health issue, and not enough treatment for obesity is provided in Finland. HUS is investigating obesity, the treatment of obesity, and weight management, as well as actively looking for effective solutions.
Based on the research data, HUS has innovated, for example, the Painonhallintatalo online service (Weight Management Hub), which has been shown to be cost-effective. In addition, the largest number of bariatric surgeries in Finland are performed at HUS. Bariatric surgery has been shown to be a game changer for the health of most obese patients.
Obesity affects the quality of life and the ability to work
The impact of obesity on the quality of life and the ability to work has been investigated in Finnish population data.
Studies show that obesity significantly reduces the quality of life and increases absences due to illness, and that treating and preventing obesity is socially viable.
Obesity changes tissue metabolism
Obesity reduces the function of mitochondria, which are responsible for cell metabolism, especially in fatty tissue. This has a clear link to a reduction in glucose and fat metabolism. Identifying these mechanisms can help in the development of new treatments for diseases resulting from obesity.
Bariatric surgery improves fatty tissue function
Obesity deteriorates the function of vital mitochondria, but it is unclear whether weight loss improves it. In HUS studies, it has been found that bariatric surgery contributes to the improvement of the function of fatty tissue mitochondria.
The Weight Management Hub is a far more cost-effective activity than traditional obesity care
Managing obesity is challenging and too little resources have been allocated to treat obesity. Digital care pathways can increase support but, at the same time, we should also ensure that the treatment is effective. HUS showed that by following the guidance provided in the Weight Management Hub, an average weight loss of 4.6 % was achieved. This corresponds to effective lifestyle guidance provided in face-to-face appointments.
Medication to help in losing weight
HUS also participated in an international study that found that the drug molecule amylin is an effective aid in the treatment of obesity. In the group that received drug treatment, weight loss was 11%, while in the placebo group, it was 3%. New drug therapies can therefore be used to significantly improve the treatment of obesity.
