The task of the Eye Bank is to perform the harvesting and processing of corneas into surgical corneal grafts.
Our nurses work with physicians to ensure that there are high-quality and safe corneal grafts available for corneal transplantation patients. The majority of corneal transplantations in Finland are carried out at HUS Eye Diseases, where patients are referred for treatment also from other counties outside the HUS area.
Our nurses book an examination appointment prior to the transplantation for the patients on the waiting list for a corneal transplant, and also schedule the surgical procedure. Those on the corneal transplant waiting list may inquire about time estimates for their surgery from the Eye Bank.
The Eye Bank is part of the Anterior Segment Surgery Unit and it cooperates with HUS organ transplantation network. The operation of the Eye Bank is subject to authorization by Fimea (formerly the Finnish Medicines Agency), which is monitored with regular inspections. In its operations, the Eye Bank complies with the Act of the Medical Use of Human Organs and Tissues and Fimea's instructions.
