Vitreoretinal Surgery Unit, Eye and Ear Hospital
Keywords:In addition to the Emergency Outpatient Clinic, the Vitreoretinal Surgery Unit is the only unit that is continuously open at the Eye and Ear Hospital.
Our Vitreoretinal Surgery Unit has an inpatient ward with 10 beds and an appointment outpatient clinic in our specialty.
Our field of specialty mainly consists of vitreous and retinal surgery, i.e. our operations are focused on surgery of the posterior segment of the eye. In addition, our unit treats patients with eye cancer requiring eye-conserving radiotherapy on a national scale.
We are also the centralized, and only, unit in Finland to handle surgical emergency repairs of retinal detachment on weekends.
On weekends, we also take care of patients who are transferred from day and week wards, as well as emergency care patients requiring inpatient care. When the Pediatric and Strabismus Unit is closed, we also treat pediatric patients with eye problems during the nights and weekends.
Surgical procedures on the posterior segment of the eye are usually long in duration, on average 1.5 to 2.5 hours, requiring microscopic surgery with special precision. Our short-stay surgery operations are increasingly transferring to the direction of day surgery. The average stay on the ward is 1.4 days.
