Additional examinations for cancer in the head and neck area
To confirm the diagnosis of cancer in the head and neck area, we will take biopsies from the tumor area and, if necessary, also from the enlarged lymph nodes in the neck. Blood tests are not of much use in diagnosing head and neck cancers.
We confirm the local extent of the disease by endoscopy of the mucosal areas and by using computer tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. If necessary, we exclude the possibility of metastases with computer tomography imaging of the chest or body. In some cases, a PET metabolism scan may also provide additional information about your disease.
Multi-professional tumor meeting
After the examinations, we will review your case in a multi-professional tumor meeting. We hold weekly meetings with oncologists, head and neck tumor surgeons, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, plastic surgeons, radiologists, and pathologists. At the meeting, we will review your examination results and the factors affecting your choice of treatment in your state of health. Based on these, we will plan an individually appropriate treatment for you.
