Hand Surgery
Keywords:At hand surgery, we treat adult and pediatric patients who require hand and upper limb surgery. Hand surgery is largely an activity that preserves the ability to work of the working-age population.
At hand surgery, we treat adult and pediatric patients who require upper limb surgery. We treat adult patients at Meilahti Bridge Hospital and Park Hospital and at the Hyvinkää and Porvoo Hospitals. Pediatric hand surgery, for example, to correct congenital malformations, is performed at New Children’s Hospital.
Our hand surgery units train almost half of the new hand surgeons in Finland. The unit is actively involved in research and we have good international networks.
Emergency patients and non-urgent hand surgery
Our patients are largely emergency patients who have injured their hand. Hand injuries represent more than a quarter of the patients arriving for treatment at emergency outpatient clinics, and about half of occupational injuries target the upper limbs. Emergency hand and upper limb injuries include a wide variety of issues: Fractures, injuries to the tendons, muscles, nerves and joints, vascular trauma, as well as amputation, explosion, and gunshot injuries, for example. In addition, emergency patients may have hand infections and acute circulatory disturbances in the upper limbs.
Non-urgent hand surgery treats a variety of hand stress injuries, osteoarthritis, nerve impingements, joint inflammations and tendinitis, and we conduct rheuma-orthopedics and arthroscopic surgical procedures.
Very rare, demanding hand surgery procedures are centralized nationally at Meilahti Bridge Hospital where we have sufficient surgical expertise, rehabilitation resources and a team of experts for aftercare. Hand surgery includes specialized teams for the aftercare of severe hand injuries and for the treatment of patients with quadriplegia and rheumatism.
We work closely with physiotherapists and occupational therapists experienced in the treatment of issues related to the hand.
National hand surgery
Nationally, HUS’s expertise in demanding hand surgery is utilized, for example, in the following situations:
- Re-attachment of disconnected limbs or their parts
- Severe acute injuries of multiple tissues in the hand and repair with tissue flaps
- Late repairs for severe hand injuries
- Severe hand deformities in children
- Adult and pediatric brachial plexus injuries
- Upper limb surgery in quadriplegic patients
- Spasticity surgery
- Severe hand burns in collaboration with plastic surgeons
- Tumors and vascular issues in the upper limbs
In the Uusimaa area, rheumatoid surgery of the hands and special hand prostheses, for example, are centralized at HUS.
The Hand Surgery Unit is committed to providing the best possible care to patients.
