Pediatric cardiac surgery
Keywords:The New Children’s Hospital manages all heart operations and other demanding cardiac procedures on children in Finland.
Each year, we perform just under 300 heart surgeries, about two thirds of which are open heart surgeries.
Nearly one third of all surgical procedures are performed on infants less than 1 month old. Two thirds of the surgical patients are less than 1 year old. Some heart defects need to be corrected with phased surgery. Because of how children grow, we also need to perform revision surgeries: about one third of the procedures we perform are revision surgeries.
Patients released from the operating room are initially treated at Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Laakso. They are then transferred to Inpatient Ward Vuori.
Our treatment outcomes for heart surgery are of a high international standard.
