Pulmonary diseases

Keywords:

We are responsible for the demanding special-level examination and treatment of pulmonary diseases as well as for the demanding special-level sleep study activities in the Helsinki University Hospital Specific Catchment Area. For example, lung transplantation and the treatment of pulmonary hypertension in Finland has been centralized at HUS.

Potilas keuhkosairauksien osastolla

We treat and examine asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, sleep apnea, and other sleep-disordered breathing conditions, inflammatory lung diseases, lung cancers, diseases of the lung tissue and pleura, and acute or long-term respiratory insufficiency.

We treat pulmonary diseases at the Meilahti, Jorvi, Peijas and Raseborg hospitals, as well as in the Sleep Research Outpatient Clinic at the Skin and Allergy Hospital. We treat respiratory paralysis patients in the Rekola Group Home and home care. Our patients come primarily from the Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen, Kerava and Kirkkonummi areas, and RaseborgHospital's patients come from the Raseborg area. The other specialist medical care units in pulmonary diseases in HUS are located in the Hyvinkää, Lohja, and Porvoo hospitals.

Our patients arrive for examinations due to various pulmonary or respiratory symptoms (such as prolonged cough, shortness of breath, and hemoptysis) or in order to obtain more detailed information on findings on chest X-rays. Assessing the need for respiratory aid treatments and the initiation and follow-up of treatments are also part of our activities.

For examination and treatment at our unit, you need a physician's referral.

The most common examination and treatment procedures

Based on symptoms and underlying diseases, we conduct the required examinations. Basic studies include X-ray examinations. In addition to the chest X-ray (thorax), we can also take images of the lesion in the lungs using CT scans or ultrasound. If necessary, we can also take samples under either CT or ultrasound guidance. We will conduct pulmonary function tests to analyze pulmonary function.
