Telestroke service

Our 24-hour video-based remote Telestroke service at HUS Neurocenter supports central hospitals in making revascularization decisions for cerebrovascular disorder patients. Consultation via a video connection is required when the hospital does not have a neurologist available 24 hours a day. The Telestroke network consists of 11 emergency clinics throughout Finland, and the service is available 24/7. Remote video connections are used for assessing approximately 700 patients each year.

Removal of the thrombosis by using either thrombolytic therapy, thrombectomy, or a combination of these, significantly improves the patient's prognosis. More and more stroke patients are recovering sufficiently to return to work or cope independently.
 
The Telestroke remote connection uses two-way video and audio through which the physician treating the patient and the patient can see the consulting neurologist at the neurology emergency department at Meilahti, Helsinki. During the consultation, we review the computed tomography images of the patient's head, the results of blood tests, as well as the blood-glucose and blood-pressure levels. Thrombolytic therapy is carried out in the consulting hospital. If the decision is made to also perform a thrombectomy, the patient will be transferred to the nearest university hospital that performs thrombectomy procedures.
