Practical training environments by student group
In our various locations, we have students from social welfare and health care schools and from medical, dental, psychology, logopedics, and translational medicine education programs participating in traineeships. We also train specialists and specialist dentists. Successful traineeships are important for the student’s competence and professional development.
As a paramedic, midwifery, nursing or public health nursing student, you can complete traineeships of varying durations with us, in accordance with your curriculum.
Your traineeship can be arranged to take place on a ward or outpatient clinic, or in a research, rehabilitation, or procedure unit. In addition, traineeships are carried out at the patients’ home and via remote connections.
Physiotherapist
As a physiotherapy student, you can complete traineeships of varying durations in our physiotherapy unit. The purpose of the traineeship period is to deepen the student’s competence, for example, in assessing the patients’ mobility and functional capacity, in exercise training the patients, in patient guidance, and in assessing the need for assistive equipment. The care of some of our patient groups has been centralized in specific HUS hospitals, so the patients instructed during the training come from each of our physiotherapy units that provide placements for traineeships.
Occupational Therapist
As a student in the occupational therapy training program in a university of applied sciences, you can complete traineeships of varying duration in our specialty fields and in different units under the guidance of our occupational therapists. The potential traineeship placements are located throughout the Uusimaa region.
During the traineeship periods, you will deepen your skills in the assessment of functional capacity, in implementing occupational therapy in individual and group form, in patient guidance, assessment of the need for assistive equipment, and documenting information. During the traineeship, you will work in a unit with children, adolescents or adults as patients. Occupational therapy can take place both on inpatient wards and as outpatient care.
Radiographer
As a student in the radiography and radiation therapy training programs, you can complete a 2–7-week traineeship with us. The traineeship is carried out in different units of the HUS Diagnostic Center. In our imaging units, it is possible to familiarize yourself with plain radiography, mammography, dental imaging, ultrasound examinations, and fluoroscopy examinations. And with computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and angiography and isotope studies. Training in radiation therapy and nuclear medicine studies can be completed at our Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Biomedical laboratory scientist
As a biomedical laboratory scientist training program student, you can complete traineeships of different lengths in our Diagnostic Center units. During the traineeship, you can deepen your skills in laboratory work in preanalytics and analytics. The HUS Diagnostic Center (HUSLAB and HUS Imaging) offers traineeships in customer service and sampling, clinical chemistry, genetics, clinical genetics and pharmacology, clinical microbiology and virology, pathology, clinical physiology and nuclear medicine, and clinical neurophysiology.
Dental hygienist
As a dental hygiene student, you can complete your two-week training at the HUS Head and Neck Center, in Musculoskeletal and Plastic Surgery, the Children and Adolescent unit, Comprehensive Cancer Center, or Heart and Lung Center. During the traineeship, you will be able to develop your cooperation and interaction skills as well as clinical skills in oral health care. In addition, ethical competence and safety expertise will be assessed. The aim is that after the traineeship you will have the capacity to work with different occupational groups in the new operating environment and to highlight the importance of oral health care there.
Podiatrist
As a podiatry student, you can complete an advanced traineeship in HUS at Meilahti Hospital’s Endocrinology Outpatient Clinic, the Skin and Allergy Hospital, the Jorvi Diabetes Center, and the Peijas Internal Medicine Outpatient Clinic. The traineeship is completed in multiprofessional working groups.
During the traineeship, the podiatry students will delve deeper into the treatment and prevention of foot problems in people with diabetes. The aim is to understand the mechanism behind the development of foot problems and to extend competence in all aspects of podiatry.
Assistive device technician
As a Master’s program student in assistive device technology at a university of applied sciences, you can complete your traineeship at the HUS Assistive Equipment Center in specialized healthcare or in assistive device units in primary health care. The training will allow you to deepen your skills in assessing patients’ mobility and functional capacity and the need for assistive equipment, in the guidance to use the assistive devices and in documenting these tasks. In maintenance activities, you will practice workshop tasks and documentation regarding assistive equipment. In the repair work as an assistive device technician trainee, you will participate in the repairs and scheduled maintenance of assistive equipment. Our patients include both adults and children who need assistive devices.
Every year at HUS, there are approximately 500 students from the University of Helsinki’s Faculty of Medicine , and approximately 200 dental students studying in the Oral Diseases Teaching and Dental Care Unit.
Where possible, we offer traineeships starting with the 3rd year students:
- For students from all Finnish medical faculties,
- for Finnish medical students studying abroad,
- for foreign medical students; and
- graduated physicians and health professionals from outside the EU/EEA who are completing the required education to become a licensed professional
We have about 2,000 specializing physicians in 50 specialties and about 80 specializing dentists in eight specialties working at HUS. More than 40% of Finland’s specialists have been trained in our hospitals.
Together with the Faculty of Medicine in University of Helsinki, we form Finland’s largest community that trains specialists, with the teaching range in our hospitals covering all the 50 specialties in medicine.
