As a student at HUS
Here you will find information you need when you have been granted a traineeship at HUS.
Student checklist before starting training
Once you have been granted a trainee placement at HUS, we will send you a welcome letter or email or call you with more detailed information about your traineeship and important instructions, including the required vaccinations that need to be taken care of before starting the training.
Review the guidelines for required vaccinations, and complete the self-assessment form for the communicable diseases questionnaire.
Our trainees must have a photo ID issued by the school with the school logo. The ID card must contain:
- the student’s first and last name (their calling name in large font)
- photograph (color photograph of a type used in passports)
- work task (e.g. nursing student)
- name and logo of their educational institution
- card expiration date (can be a semester sticker).
More detailed instructions on the trainee ID card can be found in the appendix.
Review the guidelines for pregnant students in practical training.
Starting as a trainee
Before you start in your training osition, you will be informed where to arrive on the first day of the traineeship.
In different hospitals at HUS, an info event is arranged on Mondays for new students that are starting in their training, where the student is welcomed in the traineeship and provided an orientation to HUS. The student is then escorted to their training placement unit.
The student can also be welcomed directly in their trainee placement unit as agreed where the student will be provided orientation on the matters mentioned above.
On your first day as a trainee, be prepared to present your pre-filled communicable disease questionnaire (self-assessment form) in your traineeship placement unit.
A student in practical training cannot purchase a parking permit for HUS staff which entitles to park in the Jorvi, Meilahti, Peijas and Surgical Hospital campuses.
In the Lohja and Hyvinkää hospitals, there is a tablet computer for students to use and acquire a permit for free parking for 1, 7 or 30 days at a time. More information is available from the unit’s student officers or instructors.
Students undergoing training are bound by a duty of confidentiality that applies to health care and social welfare staff. Students must sign a confidentiality agreement on their first working day or electronically as agreed before the training begins.
During training
Each student is assigned an instructor for the duration of the training.
At the beginning of the training, you will review the competency goals for the training period that will guide the progress of the practical training.
Some of the restaurants at HUS offer higher education students the possibility to purchase meals subsidized by Kela. The student must provide proof of eligibility for the meal allowance. The students from secondary education institutions receive meal support from their school, so they are not eligible for Kela-subsidized meals.
End of practical training periods
Through feedback received from the study guidance quality survey, we are developing our clinical learning environments and student guidance. The quality survey responses will be used in the national peer reviews between hospitals. In addition, survey responses can be used for research that has received the necessary research permits.
Give feedback on the guidance you have received and help us further develop our guidance activities!
A medical and dental student, or specializing physician, please complete a feedback questionnaire at the end of or during your training period.
