Spinal Cord Injury Outpatient Clinic
We are responsible for the life-long monitoring of persons with spinal cord injuries after the acute-phase treatment and immediate rehabilitation in the HUS Specific Catchment Area. We also monitor patients with spinal cord injuries for the rest of their lives. HUS Spinal Cord Injury Outpatient Clinic is one of the three centers in Finland (HUS, TAYS, OYS) where the special level of treatment, rehabilitation, and life-long follow-up of people with spinal cord injuries has been centralized by Government decree (336/2011).
Our multidisciplinary working group consists of a physiatrist, nurse, rehabilitation instructor, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, and a social worker. Our experts work together with experts from different fields. We cooperate on assessing a patient’s functional capacity and mobility, health, mental and social situation, and on evaluating the need for medical and professional rehabilitation and assistive equipment. We function as the coordinating unit for the treatment of a spinal cord injury patient.
Ward for Demanding Rehabilitation
At the Ward for Demanding Rehabilitation, we rehabilitate spinal cord injury patients after the acute stage. Our aim is to offer correctly timed, efficient and multiprofessional rehabilitation. Our key principle is to provide multiprofessional care required by demanding rehabilitation, and around-the-clock nursing promoting the patient’s functional capacity. Our aim is to rehabilitate the patient so that they are able to cope independently in activities of daily life, be mobile, and achieve better quality of life.
