HUS year 2022: Teaching and training
In 2022, the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki had 3,889 students undergoing studies at HUS. Our hospitals also supervised the internships of 5,050 students from universities of applied sciences and 305 students of vocational education and training institutions.
In 2022, we introduced Apotti training for students completing core medical studies.
The multi-discipline learning unit established at the Abdominal Center admitted its first nursing student interns in autumn 2022. In 2023, the multi-discipline learning unit will also admit medical students.
We piloted a multi-discipline tuition panel in 2022. The core purpose of this panel is for students to be heard in tuition matters at HUS, thereby making a contribution to the quality of tuition and supervision, among other things. This panel works on the same principle as the HUS customer panels.
In 2022, 120 doctors graduated from the Faculty of Medicine:
- 67 in medicine,
- 6 in dentistry,
- 37 in philosophy,
- 10 in psychology and
- 2 in nursing and health sciences.
Instructor physicians streamlined specialization
On the basis of a report on feedback from instructor physicians, this venture is off to a good start in the Helsinki area, with a positive atmosphere. Recruiting instructor physicians represented a major investment for both the university and HUS.
The instructor physicians began their work in spring 2021. The instructor physicians streamline the specialization process, to a generally high degree of satisfaction. At the end of the first year of operations, we circulated an online questionnaire to canvass the views of coordinators and directors of departments on the instructor physicians.
On the whole, the coordinators returned more positive responses than the directors. The coordinators were far more positive about collaboration with the instructor physicians than the directors were. Concerns about resource shortages were a recurring feature in the freeform responses.
Ranking improved in the training location survey of the Young Doctors’ Association
Improvement and development of specialization training in the various departments combined with a series of articles published by communications paid off when the overall ranking of HUS in the training location survey of the Young Doctors’ Association rose to three stars in the survey published in January 2022.
We are continuing our efforts to improve specialization training for physicians, and we will continue to publicize our results in 2023.
