HUS year 2023: Strategic HR planning

In 2023, we launched a strategic HR planning project as part of our development of the employee experience. Underlying this project was a recognized need for closer monitoring of the state of our personnel and for systematic leveraging of the information acquired through personnel reports and surveys.

Strategic HR planning to build situational awareness 

Timed to last for the duration of the HUS strategy period 2023–2027, the project is intended to improve HR planning and to build situational awareness of the current state of our personnel. Strategic HR planning will allow us to build a predictive model and further plans for the coming years.  

We have a recognized need to monitor the status of our personnel more closely and to acquire information more systematically and at a higher level of quality for this purpose. HR data currently resides in multiple data sources and is of very variable quality. As a result, analyzing the data requires a lot of manual work. Thus, we currently have only a fragmented and incoherent understanding of the current state of our personnel and of our future needs. Consequently, we are not able to make sufficient use of information management in HR planning.

The project was launched in autumn 2023 with a survey of the current HR situation at the HUS level and at the profit area level. 

We established the HR controller position

In 2023, we established a position with the title HR controller for the purpose of analyzed HR information management, operational planning and monitoring. HR controllers will improve the processing and analysis of HR data in line with strategic objectives to support management. HR controllers also monitor and predict personnel status and trends through information gained from HR data, reports and surveys. Moreover, HR controllers are involved in the development of policies that improve the quality of HR data.

Personnel availability and recruitment

Recruitment was lively in 2023. There were more than 5,600 vacancies and nearly 40,000 applicants. We strengthened recruitment in the profit areas by hiring regional recruiters to help supervisors.  

In late autumn 2023, we reinforced our competence in recruitment and marketing for experts by hiring four HR consultants and two planners to support profit areas. These recruitments allowed us to increase our visibility on social media channels and at events to strengthen our employer image.

Shared approach to hiring international employees

In spring 2023, we launched a project to recruit employees from abroad. This one-year project is aimed at shaping our structures and operating culture. Its purpose is to create a common HUS-wide operating model whose structures are consistent with the ethical employment of international employees.  

We gained experience in recruiting international employees with the pilot project of the Diagnostic Center in hiring Indian bioanalytics for employment in Finland in summer 2023.

First Compass events organized  

Strengthening our personnel attraction and retention capability requires employee engagement.  

In early 2023, we introduced the Compass concept to bring together interns and new HUS employees. The Compass event concept was established to provide peer-to-peer encounters for people at the start of their careers, along with inspiration to reinforce their professional identity. Teaching is a major part of the operations and continuity of our hospitals.
